Basic Ideas On Owning Freshwater Aquarium
Owning a freshwater aquarium is the mot liked hobby anywhere in the world. In fact it is the second most popular next to collecting of stamps. You can never explain the different kind of thrill and excitement you feel when you saw fish inside a caged marine setting swimming freely the whole time. In fact anybody can have an aquarium at home or at the office. There are still some who owns more than 2 units of aquarium because they felt the need of putting one. If you are one of those who hasn’t started building your own aquarium now is the right time to be guided with these basic ideas how to won a fresh water aquarium.
Mini Under water ecosystem
These are the first and the most basic step to undertake in an aquarium set up. First, is you need to prepare the gadgets and the things to buy such as the water tank, filter, heater, a few classifications of fish, aquatic plants and the rest that constitute this mini caged aquatic life. One can’t function without the other therefore to start up these things must be complied with first.
Water Chemistry
Consistency of the aquarium’s water chemistry is equally important along with the other factors. Always check the ammonia, nitrates and nitrite levels because these substances can greatly affect the fish life expectancy. Water chemistry can change when these substances also changed in its nature and quantity, however they can readily be corrected through filtration methods. The sudden increase or decrease in water chemistry level might put your fish at risk due to some stress. Fish from every variation has also different stress tolerance therefore water chemistry must be at its controlled level all the time.
Maintain Aquarium Set up
Owning an aquarium entails due diligence in keeping it in order all the time. Fish tanks must be properly handled and cleaned or else it will become dirtier over some period of time if not cleaned regularly. For easier cleaning a filter can be utilized to remove dirt residues inside the tank.
Consider also proper regulation of heat inside the aquarium. Actual temperature setting can be simulated by turning on the light during day time and putting it off on night time. The purpose of this is to give an actual feel of what really a natural habitat can be. There are fish that might be at risk because of over lighting therefore proper lighting must be applied all the time to maintain the normal balance within the fresh water aquarium.
Monitor also the acidity of the water inside the aquarium. Ph level testing kits can be readily bought at a local hobby stores and these are more practical ways of detecting how acidic or alkaline water can be. Fish won’t survive in an acidic environment neither the plants also so it is a must to check its water ph levels.
Place the aquarium in their appropriate area
For safety purposes an aquarium can’t be placed anywhere in the house where busy activities are going on. It must be situated in a place where it can’t be reached by small children. Children get easily fascinated by fish that they would tend to touch it or grab it at once. Fish tanks are breakable and brittle so freshwater aquarium is not appropriate in a low area instead it must be displayed in a higher place.
Ideally you can look for an area where there is an adequate supply of water so that you can partially change the water easily. With the use of some pails you won’t have difficult time fetching water outside.
Freshwater aquarium should not be facing directly to sunlight because fish won’t live longer in a very hot environment. Artificial or natural lighting must be maintained at its tolerable level. Proper passage way is also recommended near your fresh water aquarium so that it can be easily transported or transferred to other location.

Proper Artificial Lighting To Freshwater Aquarium
Proper lighting is one of the essential elements for a balanced underwater ecosystem. Technically termed as photosynthesis, it is equally important to organisms like fish and other aquatic animals to produce food. Freshwater aquarium requires specific kind of light so that fish may live longer. Some may require minimum lighting; others prefer intense lighting so the application of lighting to the aquarium is another thing to be serious about.
There is a number of artificial lighting available in the market today that can be used to brighten your fish tanks. Every aquarium has special features that require specific kind of lighting therefore each aquarium requires different type of lighting.
Incandescent bulbs generally are not advisable for fish water tanks because of its low luminosity and high energy consumption. It tends to get hot too quickly fish may die due to sudden change of heat therefore it is not efficient to use.
Fluorescent bulbs on the other hand are the most used type of lighting option because of its relatively high luminosity and low energy consumption. Fluorescent lamps are truly favorable for the freshwater aquarium since they can be readily available at all times.
Metal halide lamps are considered to be a better lighting alternative for freshwater aquarium because of its intense lighting. Its light so in tensed that can be compared to the actual sun light making it appropriate for a busy marine ecosystem. Metal halide lamps are notably expensive and a bit hard to maintain.
What is the appropriate type of lighting to use?
There are a number of factors to deal with before deciding which type of artificial lighting to use. The most basic one is to consider the general condition and the specification of the aquarium these things when combined together will constitute the total well being of marine life inside your aquarium.
Take into consideration the population inside the aquarium, depth of the water and the entirety of the fish tank.
In an aquarium where there are only fish present on it medium lighting maybe applied. It is not necessary to apply intense lighting to aquariums of this type. Usually minimum wattage requirement is 2-3 watts per tank gallon. The quality of lighting may vary according to the number of population. The more fish you have then more lighting can be applied to accommodate them all.
Fish tanks with fish and live plants added on it requires intense lighting. The more intense the lighting is the better it would be. 4 watts per tank gallon should be the minimum wattage for these types of tanks. The bigger the water tank is the more lights should be shared with. Be cautious to note that there are some kinds of marine life requiring specific type of luminosity. Learn techniques and information from the experts to properly address this concern.
It is suggested that once in a while you perform light simulation wherein you regulate the light of your freshwater aquarium the same way as the sun lights. It must be brightly lighted the whole day while turned it off the whole night. This will bring good effects to fish from getting too stressed in an artificial aquatic environment. Simulating the lights will make fish feel they actually lived in their natural habitat.
Freshwater aquarium is a fun hobby that involves a generous amount of discipline and responsibilities. Just like any other jobs or hobbies freshwater aquarium has its distinct characteristics and needs that should be given preferential attention. With the hints cited above about proper artificial lighting keeping a freshwater aquarium at home can be the most rewarding experience you can truly have.

Setting Up A Freshwater Aquarium
The decision has been made and the tank has been bought and kept in its place of honour. The question now arises what exactly is it that you need to put in this tank to allow an ecosystem of sorts to flourish.
The substrate is essential to the tank and comes right at the beginning, or in this case right at the bottom of the tank. While deciding between small and large sized substrates, there are several things to keep in mind but do remember that the smaller stuff is more liked by the fish. Sand and small rocks are a cheap if not free part of small substrate and easy to get. They also help dressing up the tank. But if your fish pick this stuff up and keep it in their mouth, which they tend to do with the smaller substrate, expect irritation in their mouth.
Rocks, pebbles and things like these form the medium-sized substrate and is often seen in tanks. Big substrate means things like river rocks- rarely to be seen in freshwater tanks. Sometimes a bottom layer of big substrate gives the tank a grand look but this can trap food particles that float down contaminating the water and potentially hurting the fish.
Before you add any new substrates, consider the affect they can have on the water. Crushed coral has the potential to increase the Ph levels in water. Substrate can also affect the fish in other ways.
Certain substrates are to be avoided in your freshwater aquarium setup as they damage the water. These include dolomite. geodes, granite, lava rock, limestone, onyx, quartz, sandstone, shells and slate.
To figure out if other things that you would like to add to the tank which may not have been purchased for it specifically you should run a couple of tests. One way is to put lots of drops of vinegar on the rocks or the gravel that you plan to place in the tank. If it creates some foam or fizz or has an unexpected reaction, you should not use it. This is because it contains calcium that affects the water.
A second way is to place the substrate material in a bucket of water that is to be used in your freshwater aquarium and run a test for pH balance and hardness. Let the material be in the bucket for a week and if you see no major change then this is usable.
A variety of testing kits are available online or at pet stores. You must know which ones are needed and which just a waste of your money.
Unusual pH levels lead to stress for your fish and their death so a pH Levels Test Kit is a must. If you observe pH drifting’ or unexpected changes, check the Carbonate Hardness (KH) levels of the water.
Ammonia levels need to be high during the freshwater aquarium setup period and not later but this can happen due to dirty water, filters, medicines or even overstocking of the tank. That’s why an Ammonia Test Kit is necessary.
Make sure that the nitrite levels are less than 1.0. Nitrite is a toxic byproduct left after organic waste breaks down.
While nitrate is a medium-level poison for fish, high levels can still be damaging and it needs to be maintained at or below 300 ppm (parts per million).
In a freshwater aquarium setup most owners have several things they would like to plug in. Considering that this involves a mix of water and electricity, invest in a power strip that is waterproof and offers protection against surges.

Tools For Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance
Tidy and clean freshwater aquarium is something a hobbyist can truly be proud of. In order to achieve a clean sparkling water tank regular maintenance should be done. Cleaning can be messy and tiring in the sense that you have to prepare things such as tools and cleaning agents to ensure a more appropriate fish living here are the suggested 7 tools to prepare to start your cleaning process.
Gravel Vacuums
They are specifically called aquarium gravel vacuums. These vacuums greatly work on absorbing and sucking off excess aquarium dirt such as food and waste materials. These waste materials if not timely collected will cause much stress and bad effects on fish and other aquatic plants.
Algae Pads/Scraper/Scrubber
These tools specifically remove algae from the aquarium’s whole surrounding. Scraper or scrubber is more commonly used on glass tanks while softer algae pads are generally used for acrylic tanks because they can be easily scratched.
Fish Nets
Fish nets serve a variety of uses to your freshwater aquarium. These nets can be utilized to separate fish from its kinds just like a conventional fish farmer when they grow and catch fish of varying types in the sea. Fish nets can also transport and transfer dead fish from the live ones. Accordingly fish net’s holes determine their uses, most small holed fish nets are ideal for small fry and the large ones for the bigger fish.
Forceps or Tongs
Tongs are for picking small or certain mini objects that may cause obstruction to your aquarium such as dead fish, dry plants and dirty stuffs that are not useful to your freshwater aquarium. Be careful not to put much pressure on the tongs when you dip it to the water for it might accidentally lift small fish on the side. Look for some rust found on your tongs it might affect the water chemistry level of the water.
Pails
Pails are the most commonly used water container for your aquarium. They can be manually utilized for cleaning your freshwater aquarium. You can easily replace the water inside your water tank through using the pail.
Siphon Tubes
Siphon tubes are used to drain the water inside the aquarium conveniently without having to move your aquarium or tilt it sideways. Ideally minimum in length siphon tubes must be at least able to reach the floor from the rim of the aquarium.
Water PH Testing Kits
Testing kits for water ph levels is one of the most desired tools to have for your fresh water aquarium maintenance because of its noted importance on water chemistry change. These are readily available in your local aquarium shops everywhere. Ph testing kits are used to test the acidity of any substance such as water for its acidity or alkalinity. Before supplying tap water to your freshwater aquarium, tap water must be tested first for its ph level. If it is found to be safe to use then by all means tap water can be supplied to your home aquarium. Litmus paper and ph solutions can be used to test ph level on water. Very easy to use if you have ph solutions at home drop 2 to 3 times of your ph solutions to the water and you can readily assess if its acidic or not. When the water turns yellow or orange it is then acidic if its blue or green the water is alkaline. Ph level of less than 7.0 is acidic; more than 7.0 it is alkaline. These are basically the most practical way of testing your water ph levels.
Keeping a freshwater aquarium can be made easy with these tools mentioned above. As a hobbyist it is your duty to safeguard your aquarium from any disturbances and stress it may cause to your fish. Moreover making it clean and tidy all the time is something you have to do right because a dirty aquarium is not lovely to look at and it is not suitable for your fish to live it. Maintain its cleanliness, apply due diligence when cleaning and you are off for a great start for your fresh water aquarium.
